Here we go again
It’s happened again. On saturday, after the shot on the left, I turned
off the camera, put it in my pocket and moved around to the zebra
finches. Turned it back on and it made a lovely crunch noise, and
turned back off. The only way to keep it from turning off is to shake
it violently during powerup. Still, its on I thought.
So I took this
photo off a zebra finch and then realised that the crunchy sound was the autofocus.
So I now have a dilemma (well a new one).
Do I…
- …buy a Pentax A40 (which might last 14 months) only 3x zoom but 12mp photos
- …buy a Panasonic Lumix TZ3 with 10x optical zoom which is something I’d like as 3 is a bit low, however it’s only 7mp, 1mp down from current photos.
- …buy a UltraZoom camera such as the PowerShot S3 IS* a bit pricey and big to carry round
- …buy a Digital SLR such as the EOS 400D* with huge expenditure there-after
Sadly I’ve got no need to keep with Pentax, they’ve changed their battery system so my current batteries, chargers and cables are all pretty much defunct. – Not true the A30 shares the same battery / case / charger to the older models
*I’ve only chosen Canon for this as it came to mind, I don’t even want to get started in a Nikon Vs Canon battle, I’ll leave this for elsewhere, but obviously all advice taken in the comments!
I’ve opened up the comments to anyone to post wihtout logging in, so please let me know…
UPDATE: Pentax A30 bought
UPDATE2: Canon 400D received as a gift!

I would also go for a DSLR. It’s much for fun with a “real” camera. My DSLR literally changed my world. And don’t forget the used market.
I have to agree with Henrikj. A dSLR may open you up to further expenditure, but it will improve your photography a great deal. Since I bought mine at the start of the year I began viewing everything I see as a possible photograph.
How much was the Pentax camera you had Phil? – How much of a jump is it going to be getting a DSLR?
I’m not totally sure what the ‘huge exdenditure thereafter’ is about, I’ve had my 400D for 8 months so far and the only thing I’ve brought is a nice case for it :)
My Pentax was £150 in August 06. I’m scared abotu all the lenses!
The Kit lens – the one that the 400D comes with out of the box – is fine! Like I said I’ve had mine for about 8 months and only now am I thinking that I’d like to get a more capable one :)
